In 1574, the Spanish sailor Juan Fernández discovered the archipelago that carries his name. The archipelago is formed by the islands Robinson Crusoe, Santa Clara and Marinero Alejandro Selkirk.
History has left his footsteps on these lands. The archipelago has been a passing place of explorers and adventurers, hiding place of pirates and their treasures, shelter of the sailor that inspired the novel Robinson Crusoe, and the site of a prison during the independence of Chile.
This nature sanctuary, situated in the heart of the South Pacific, facing the coast of Chile, offers us one of the last corners of the world in which we could get close to virgin nature. The richness and variety of its flora and fauna, and the astonishing geography, drawn in a continuous contrast of opposites, offers us a touching landscape. It was declared a National Park of Chile in 1935, and World Reservation of the Biosphere by UNESCO in 1977.
