Especially designed for anyone with a deep interest in livestock, this tour visits Oregon’s most progressive dairies, cattle breeders, cattle ranches, creameries and research centers. Interviews with dairymen, ranchers, researchers and industry leaders reveal new methods and products. There is also time for fun and memorable photos of Oregon’s dramatic coast, Cascade mountains and high desert.
Day one, Sunday
Arrive Portland, Oregon and meet Anglatin. Following lunch we explore Portland's many attractions including parks, museums, shopping districts, and micro-breweries. Overnight Portland
Day two, Monday
This morning we visit Oregon’s largest and best-managed Holstein dairy. Our interview with the manager reveals how he has been successful in a difficult market. After lunch at the Mt. Angel Brewing Company, we visit a well-known Jersey dairy, where we see intensive pasture management and by-product feeding. Next we visit a Guernsey dairy specializing in waste management and silage feeding. Overnight Portland
Day three, Tuesday
Following breakfast we head to the sparkling Pacific coast where we find famous Tillamook Cheese. After a tour of the Tillamook Creamery Association plant we enjoy one of their famous lunches. In the afternoon we visit two Tillamook Creamery Association member dairies. A scenic drive along the beach takes us to Seaside where we can stroll the beach and sample fresh Dungeness crab and salmon. Overnight Portland
Day four, Wednesday
Today we travel down the Willamette valley with a stop at an innovative Hereford breeder and Angus breeder near Oregon State University. The University’s dairy and beef specialists will join us for a workshop. In Eugene we visit a modern milk plant. Overnight Eugene
Day five, Thursday
Our bus takes us through the green forested hills of Southern Oregon and over the Cascade mountains to high desert cattle country. At our first stop in the Cascade Mountain foothills we see a wonderfully successful pasture management program combining sheep and beef cows. Near Klamath Falls, we visit a cow-calf operation with mixed irrigated pasture and mountain rangeland. Overnight Klamath Falls
Day Six, Friday
Early in the morning we visit the local slaughterhouse where both cows and hogs are prepared for overseas shipment. Later we visit the major Angus breeder in the Klamath Basin and learn about their very successful breeding programs, and how cows and Antelope cooperate.
