Forestry Tour of Eastern Canada

Day 1
Flight to Montréal / Dorval  Greeting at Montreal airport.  Transfer to Québec city.  Dinner and lodging in Québec city. 

Day 2: Québec
8:30AM - city tour of Québec city.  Noon: Lunch in a sugar shack with explanation of the transformation process of the maple sip (from sugar-maple tree) into syrup.  Visit of the maple forest of the maple producer. 3PM: Montmorency falls (83 m) and free time in the old city.  7:30PM: Dinner in the old city.

Day 3: Québec
Meeting with a representative (forest engineer) of the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources (Forestry Sector) in Quebec. Highlights of the presentation : private woodlots forestry , profile of Québec’s forest , biodiversity of the forest environment , forest ecosystems and managing , timber use and wood processing;  legislation and regulations , presentation of Québec’s forest management policy based on the sustainability of timber supply and the other resources and many others thematic. Leaving Quebec for Duschesnay Forest station  ( 45 minutes road). Greetings a forest representative of the station. General presentation on Duchesnay  as a complete formation center with the following sight :tourism and recreation, educational program on forestry management and experimentation, research, education. Lunch at Duschesnay. SÉPAQ  (Societe des établissements de plein air - Québec society of outdoor lodging and parks ) The recreational in the forest
Visit of the educational Center and forest exploration. Transportation on an operational forest site presentation on thoses forest operation  and experimentaion on this Visit at the sawmill’s school of Duschesnay. Coffe break with presentation of the activities at the sawmill and on different project by a representative of  Commission Scolaire  Chauveau. Presentation of the research activities at the  Ministère des Ressources Naturelles (Québec natural resources ministry). Transportation to the graft  center of Duchesnay. Stop at the Arboretum and explanation on thoses activities and there genetic’s research. Departure and stop at the wendake amerindian  Center visit of the traditional Huron village, a partial reconstitution of a traditional Amerindian village with Huron traditional dinner before returning in Québec  .

Day 4: Québec
RESAM Presentation at the hotel: This organization Regroupement des sociétés d’aménagement (RESAM) is an association of 44 foresters groups which reach 22000 members in the province of Québec  their goals are stock management, the reforestation, formation, forest installation, the promotion and the defence of the target interest of the producers. Resam publishes a newspaper with 10,000 copies in addition to giving a data- processing support. The challenge of the hour for the members of the organization is on the level of certification. early lunch. Leaving for the Beauce appalaches. Arrival time 13h30 at the Local office of Syndicat des producteurs de Bois de Beauce SPBB (private wood producers union)
In afternoon visit / meeting (in a private woodlot) with an administrator (also owner of the woodlot) of the Beauce wood producers association which have 11,000 active producers and one of the most dynamic in the province. Presentation of the technical and the practical activities of the association. Visit of their machinery stable. Agricultural producers form 32% of forestry owners, the largest group in the private forest sector. The supply of wood to the lumber and pulp and paper industries, as well as the production of maple syrup, essential oils, charcoal, Christmas trees and firewood, make the private forest one of Quebec’s leading socio-economic development agents. Visit of a second farm involved in Christmas tree production. Quebec lumberjack dinner and evening in the Beauce at the Cabane à Pierre a typical lumberjack camp with a lot of atmosphere.

Day 5:  Québec / St-Jean Lake 
Breakfast - departure for the visit at Montmorency’s Forest. Visit of the university education and research forest - Foret Montmorency : scientific trials and research projects concerning timber felling and harvesting methods, silvicultural treatments, reforestation, forest protection approaches against insects, diseases and fire and other activities affecting the different forest resources (wildlife, water, soil, landscapes). Lunch at foret Montmorency at 12h00 to 13h15 Departure  with scholar bus for the Daishowa  production site (on public forest land) visit. 3PM :  visit of the Leduc operation center in the Laurentian park, which is managed by Daishowa Paper:  typical harvesting operations with big forestry machinery in public forests will be seen. Road to Cepal Arrival at the hotel for dinner.

Canadian Forestry

Day 6: St-Jean lake
Early breakfast at 7h00 and departure at 7h45 for the meeting at the Cooperative Laterriere, a forest coop of private owner producers.
AM: visit of the main facilities of the forestry cooperative of Laterrière, This very large coop of local forest producers does harvesting (they have their own machinery) and owns and operates a sawmill, and a nursery including that we will visit this morning.  Visit of an harvesting site in operation. Lunch and visit of a local forestry machinery dealer in Latteriere. Free time in Jonquière or Chicoutimi at the end of the afternoon and return at Cepal for evening and dinner.

Day 7: St Jean Lake / Montréal 
Road to to La Tuque along the St-Maurice river valley road. 12h30 stop for the lunch at the Auberge des Montagnars Inn / Club Hosanna , a small auberge and a renown outfitter. You will meet Mr Michel Beland and after the lunch he will present the relation between the outfitter and the forest producers. Mr Béland is a member of the Provincial  Outfitter association.   Road to Montréal in the afternoon the arrival in Montréal, view of Montréal from the Olympic tower. Installation at the hotel and dinner in a typical restaurant called La cage aux Sports.

Day 8: Montréal
AM : city tour and visit of the biôdome, the living Museum of nature. Noon: Lunch. Free time for leisure in the afternoon. Dinner at 7:30PM.

Day 9: Montréal / Ottawa
AM : road to Ottawa by the panoramic Ottawa river road with, en route.  10:00AM: visit of a wood producer (with machinery operation in his woodlot) member of Société sylvicole de l'Outaouais (Silvicultural society of Outaouais area). Lunch at 1:15PM in Gatineau and city tour of Ottawa.

Day 10: Ottawa / Niagara Falls
Early departure at 8h00 After the breakfast. 10AM:Visit of Eastern Ontario Model Forest. A representative of the Ontario woodlot producers association will also be there.
The meeting point will be: forest in Southern Ontario eighty-eight percent of the EOMF region is privately owned. Addressing forest management issues requires keeping a large population informed. A network of demonstration areas is now under development to provide "living classrooms", where woodlot owners and communities can learn more about how to implement sustainable forest management practices. The EOMF is an alliance of private individuals, First Nations peoples, businesses, non-governmental agencies, working together to sustain and improve the economic, social and cultural value of the forests of eastern Ontario. A network for everyone with a stake in the forests of eastern Ontario to exchange information, develop new science and technology, create public awareness and to shape a sustainable future for eastern Ontario, across Canada and around the world.
Lunch. 2PM: 1000 islands cruise on the St-Laurewce river. En route to Niagara Falls. Arrival in Niagara for dinner at 8PM.

Day 11: Niagara Falls
AM : visit of Niagara Falls and mini-cruise at the foot of the falls on the Maid of the Mist.  Lunch in Niagara-on-the-lake and visit of this charming village. Visit of an Ontario winemaker with wine tasting. 7:30PM: Farewell dinner overlooking the falls.

Day 12: Niagara Falls / Toronto / Toronto airport
Route to Toronto. Visit of Toronto: Toronto is a town in full expansion and bustling with activities. Since 1977, the first city of Canada and an important business center. Toronto is the cultural Center of English speaking Canada with its museums unmatched in the rest of the country, the vitality of its theatres, symphonic orchestras, national ballet, opera etc. The recent influx of immigrants gives the city a most vitalizing cultural mix. The renovation of the old quarters mix with the skyscrapers makes for a charming decor. 1:30PM: Lunch at the top of CN tower. Transfer to the airport according with the flight schedule.
